Corey Ferguson fired a phenomenal 43 points to claim the Dubai Duty Free – Mark Fahy Memorial Golf Tournament trophy at the pristine Dubai Hills Golf Club.
Dubai Duty Free has supported the Dubai Irish Golf Society (DIGS) since its inception in 2015. Now on its 17th edition, the annual Mark Fahy Memorial Golf Tournament sponsored by Dubai Duty Free saw ninety two DIGS members took on the Dubai Hills challenge which runs in Memory of Mark Fahy, a prominent figure within the Irish community here in Dubai before sadly losing his battle with Cancer.
Ferguson fired in nine of 24 and 19 points respectively, in an impressive scoring event where 19 players carded 36 points or better. With 8 net birdies and net eagle, Ferguson finished 1 point ahead of the men’s division winner, Ayhem Salam, who carded 42 points in an unbelievable round where he found himself 9 under through 9 holes.
This would result in a 1 point winning margin from runner-up, Emmet Nolan, and third place, Padraig Kirby, who both carded rounds of 41 points. Emmet would eventually pip Padraig to third after having the best back nine score of 23 points.
Commenting on the success of the tournament, Colm McLoughlin, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of Dubai Duty Free said: “As one of the founding member of the Dubai Irish Golf Society, we are delighted to have a good turnout this year and to see new members playing and supporting this event which honours Mark Fahy, a good friend of Dubai Duty Free and of the Irish community.
“Thanks to the DIGS Captain Michael Walsh, my team at Dubai Duty Free and to the Dubai Hills Gold Club for making this year’s event so enjoyable.”
JJ O’Toole picked up the gross winner’s trophy and a fine round of 73 which would see him finish 2 shots clear of his nearest competitors. He experienced a somewhat turbulent round which included 5 birdies, an eagle, and 3 double bogies. Nicola Chittenden was crowned champion of the Ladies Division after a solid round of 35 points. Nicola’s consistency proved too much to handle for Laura Kirkham, who had to settle for the runners-up trophy, having found herself 4 points back on 31.
Walsh, Captain of the Dubai Irish Golf Society, praised the continual support of Dubai Duty Free, the Society Members, and all participants in the event and looks forward to hosting many more in the future.
