A 105-year-old woman has proved the adage ‘age is just a number’ when she sprinted 100m in just 45.40 seconds.
In the process, she broke the record of 101-year-old Maan Kaur who ran the 100m in 74 seconds and won gold at the World Masters.
The centenarian from India’s Haryana state was participating at National Open Masters Athletics Championships in Vadodara, Gujarat.
Rambai has become the inspiration for not only the youngsters of the country but also for all those aged Indians who assume that physical activity after 70 is just limited to a short walk in the park.
It is Rambai’s granddaughter Sharmila Sangwan, who has been driving her ‘Super Nani (Granny)’ to places to take part in athletics championships across the country.
Rambai, who made her running debut in Varanasi last year in November, has collected a lot of medals from events in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala.
At the latest championships she was the only athlete in above 85 category.
At the Vadodara event she not only won medal in 100m on June 15th but also a medal in 200m on June 19.
She finished 200m race in a minute and 52.17 seconds.
According to local media, Rambai was born in the year 1917, when World War I was at its peak.
It was when George V, the grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II, ruled India.
The year 1917 also saw the first Pulitzer Prizes being awarded in various disciplines in the US.
According to granddaughter Sharmila, Rambai recently took up running. And that her performance in the recent events only motivates her to do better in the coming days.
