It’s not often that two of the most prestigious trophies in the sporting world visit newspaper establishments in this country, but that was the case today as the DP World Tour Championship Trophy and the Harry Vardon Trophy stopped by on their whistlestop tour of Gulf Today and Al Khaleej offices ahead of the season-ending tournament next month.
The DP World Tour Championship, Dubai returns to the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates from 17-20 November and will welcome the top 50 players on the DP World Tour Rankings as they bid for glory in the final event of the season.
The course, and tournament, have a reputation for delivering dramatic finales and providing a stage for the biggest stars to shine with the likes of Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Matthew Fitzpatrick tasting victory in front of tens of thousands of fans at one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world of golf.
The 2021 edition witnessed one of the most thrilling finishes in recent memory with Collin Morikawa capturing a sublime Dubai double after he birdied five of his last seven holes to become the first American to win both the season-long rankings and DP World Tour Championship, Dubai.
Apart from crowning the winner of the DP World Tour Championship, the tournament is usually also a title decider for the iconic Harry Vardon Trophy, which is awarded to the leading player on the DP World Tour Rankings following the conclusion of the fifth and final Rolex Series event of the season in Dubai.
A plethora of the game’s greatest players have got their hands on the trophy, including McIlroy, Rahm, Colin Montgomerie, Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros and Bernhard Langer to name a few.
