Dubai-based Rayan Sajjid Koothrat won the boys’ singles title at the J5 Fujairah ITF West Asia Cup.
The 15-year-old student of Gems Our Own High School, Al Warqaa, defeated Romania’s Robert Guna 6-4, 6-4 in the final of a tournament organised by Fujairah Tennis and Country Club (FTCC).
The top seed, who hails from India, didn’t face much difficulty in wrapping up the battle against the Romanian.
After losing in the singles final, Guna found solace in winning the doubles title with Greece’s Pavlos Tsitsipas.
Guna and Pavlos edged past Pade Maz and Kanbargimath 6-1, 6-7 (10-4), in a thrilling match.
Daria Stefania Malaescu won the girls’ singles crown.
Stefania Malaescu did it in style after sweeping aside seventh seed Clelia Drudi Lombardi 6-1, 6-3.
The top seed dominated the match completely and didn’t break a sweat to win the final against the Italian.
Later, Stefania Malaescu partnered Brunkel Laura in the doubles and defeated the Indo-Mauritius pairing of Jannat Chiripal 6-3, 6-4.
“Since its start a few years ago, the tournament has offered an ideal environment for nurturing talent, improving their skills to compete at the highest levels, and enhancing the position of the club as the preferred destination for sports in the Emirate,” said Abdul Ghafour Behrozian, Chairman of Fujairah Tennis and Country Club.
Behrozian and Alia Bujasim, a board member of the UAE Tennis Federation, gave away the prizes to the winners.
