The Sharjah Self-Defence Sports Club athletes returned to the UAE after an outstanding performance at the AJP Tour Europe Continental Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2023 held in Turkey.
A total of 68 teams participated in the championship, and Sharjah Self-Defence Sports Club finished second and won 30 medals, including 16 gold, eight silver, and six bronze medals.
The club’s homecoming at Sharjah International Airport was met with a warm and enthusiastic welcome.
The heroic welcome at Sharjah Airport was graced by the presence of board members Muhammad Abdullah Bourhima and Ali Obaid Al Hammoudi, the families of the players, and other employees of Sharjah Self-Defence Sports Club.
Ahmed Abdul Rahman Al Owais, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sharjah Self-Defence Sports Club, dedicated the accomplishment to His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, for his unwavering support, which played a key role in establishing the club as one of the most prominent clubs in the world.
Owais also thanked Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of the Sharjah Executive Council, and stressed that his strategic vision of the necessity to work on exploring, discovering, and developing national talent contributed to the club’s success.
Owais expressed gratitude to the Sharjah Sports Council for their continuous support. He applauded the technical and administrative staff's preparation of the players to compete in all tournaments with high desire and in a way that helps them realize their goals, as well as the follow-up of the Sports Training Department of the Sharjah Self-Defence Sports Club.
Abdul Aziz Mohammed Al Hammadi, Director of the Sports Training Department at the club, said: “The AJP Tour Europe Continental Jiu-Jitsu Championship is regarded as one of the most competitive international championships due to the presence of top athletes from around the world.
“Our club's athletes showed exceptional skill to perform well at the championship and clinched medals,” he added.
Hammadi highlighted the need for the technical and administrative staff of the club to focus on qualitative improvement in the technical and mental performance of the players so that they can compete in a better way at the upcoming events.
