As a part of its plans to support community sports, the University of Sharjah will organise its annual marathon on March 5.
The annual marathon is sponsored by Air Arabia, and participation is open to all members of the local and university communities across all age groups and genders. The event is taking place under the patronage of Dr Hamid Majoul Al Nuaimi, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah.
Dr Amina Al Marzouqi, Vice Chancellor for Student and Branch Affairs, stressed the importance of organising this marathon to promote healthy habits and encourage university students to practice regular sports.
Professor Eid Mohammad Kanaan, Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Sharjah and head of the organizing committee, highlighted that the marathon is an extension of the sports tournaments and gatherings that the university has successfully organised as a regular activity in its annual programme due to its importance in spreading the culture of practicing sports. He called on the members of the community to participate actively and thanked Air Arabia for its cooperation in sponsoring the marathon.
Salah Taher Al Ameri, Director of the Marathon and Head of the Sports Activities Department at the University, revealed the readiness of the organising committee to host the races according to international sports standards.
He explained that the marathon will include five categories: a 1-kilometre race for people with determination; a 1500-metre race for women of all ages, along with children aged 15 and below; a 2-kilometre race for the elderly aged 51 and above (masters); a 2.5-kilometre race for men aged 31–50; and finally, a 3-kilometre race for youth aged 16–30.
Ameri said the marathon coincides with the approaching Holy month of Ramadan, aiming to encourage participants to maintain an active lifestyle throughout the month.
He mentioned that some schools and universities near the campus have been invited to participate as well.
