Dubai International (DXB) will remain exceptionally busy over the remainder of the holiday season and well into the New Year, with nearly 2 million passengers expected to pass through DXB.
The operator urged passengers to plan their trips to and through the airport and follow simple travel tips to ensure a smooth airport experience.
DXB’s average daily passenger numbers have risen almost back to pre-pandemic levels on the back of strong recovery throughout 2022, making this latest seasonal peak one of busiest since 2019.
Over the next eight days starting 27th December, nearly 2 million passengers are expected to pass through DXB, with average daily traffic reaching as many as 245,000 passengers. 2nd January is expected to be the busiest day with traffic exceeding 257,000 passengers.
December has been exceptionally busy for DXB due to a combination of factors including the seasonal influx of visitors, the recently concluded World Cup football event in Doha, and the strength of Dubai’s position as one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations.
Dubai Airports is working closely with airlines, control authorities, and commercial and service partners to ensure a smooth airport experience for arriving and departing passengers. The operator has urged travellers to follow a few simple tips to beat the holiday rush:
For those travelling with families, children over the age of 12 can use Smart Gates to speed up the passport control process. The roads to the airport could get busy during peak times. It’s best to plan some extra time to get to and through the airport. Travellers flying out of Terminal 1 should arrive at the airport no earlier than 3 hours before departure. Use online and self-service options wherever available to get off to a smooth start to your journey. Those travelling from Terminal 3 can use Emirate’s convenient early and self-service check-in facilities. Weighing luggage at home, checking documents in advance, and being prepared for security checks can save a lot of time at the airport.
Dubai Metro, which has stations at DXB’s Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, will be operational round the clock from Dec.31, 2022, to Jan.1, 2023. Friends and families are advised to use the airport’s designated car parks or valet service to receive their guests in comfort as access to the arrival forecourt in Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 are limited to public transport and other authorised vehicles.
Meanwhile, the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority has published the world first national regulation related to Vertiports to support rapid developments and continued worldwide investment in the UAE’s highly progressive and competitive aviation industry.
This regulation covers the design and operational requirements of vertiports while ensuring a regulatory environment that supports the efficient and safe operation of vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft.
The proposed amendments of the new draft regulation have been released for industry consultation, and it will be published later in its final version in the first quarter of 2023.
The rapid and increasing development of electrical vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft have created an imperative for new infrastructure, new networks and new regulatory approaches.
The demand for Vertiports continues to accelerate as eVTOL manufacturers aim to launch their aircraft by 2024. As a potential global network is envisaged by 2030, this novel carbon-neutral industry must be served by suitable, safe and regulated infrastructure.
Through safe and orderly infrastructure, the promises associated with this new mode of transportation include ensuring rapid movement of passengers within cities and reducing traffic jams, as well as rapid logistical responses to emergencies and easy access to markets across cities.
The UAE vertiports regulation strengthens the UAE’s Urban Air Mobility proposition while at the same time enhancing the level of safety within the aviation sector, and proactively provides a unique certification and regulatory oversight framework for vertiports. This increases the safety of our critical national infrastructure and aviation system while maintaining the UAE’s pioneering status within the global aviation industry.
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the General Civil Aviation Authority, said, “The proactive development of a regulatory framework for vertiports establishes a foundation within the UAE to ensure safe and seamless operation of urban air mobility. The rapid growth of advanced air mobility presents opportunities in the reduction of carbon emissions, decreased congestion, and entry to inaccessible markets, which are achievable through vision, planning and close collaboration with our stakeholders in the aviation industry.”
Meanwhile, Etihad Airways is set to strengthen air connectivity between the UAE and China next year, starting with an additional weekly frequency on its Abu Dhabi Shanghai route.
Subject to regulatory approval, from February 2023, the airline will fly to Pudong International Airport (PVG) two times per week using modern Boeing 787 and 777 aircraft.
Combined with a weekly service to Beijing and a twice-weekly service to Guangzhou, this will provide travellers with five weekly non-stop flights between Abu Dhabi and China.
