Pakistan-born Oscar-winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has a new feather adorning her cap: she has become the first woman and person of colour to be chosen to direct a Star Wars film. She was congratulated by none other than Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra. But in her praise she called Sharmeen a ‘South Asian,’ for which she was called out by none other than Pakistani actor Adnan Siddiqui.

Siddiqui slammed her for not calling Sharmeen a Pakistani instead of a South Asian.

He shared a picture of PeeCee’s post and tweeted, ‘With due respect, @priyankachopra Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is a Pakistani first just to brush up your knowledge. Much like the way you flaunt your Indian nationality whenever you get the opportunity before claiming to be a South Asian," claims a report in sections of the Indian media.

Several netizens threw their weight behind Siddiqui, with messages such as: ‘Very true Adnan bro’, ‘Lol when it's an Indian then "it's INDIAN" but when it's a Pakistani they suddenly become "South Asian" Pakistan kehtay hui takleef hoti ha ? (Do you have problems calling her a Pakistani?)’.

Forty-six years after the first Star Wars film hit the silver screen – in 1977 – it still captivates the imagination of millions of movie buffs around the world. Now, three new Star Wars movies are in the making, one of them to be helmed by Sharmeen.
