Multifaceted artist Rozan Awad is Palestinian, though she was born in the UK and raised in Finland. An architect, artist and designer, she says art has been her passion since she was a child. She has been an art practitioner for over 20 years now in Dubai, where she “loves the peace.” “I appreciate everything genuine and authentic,” Awad says. “My art reflects on how an art piece can make a significant difference in the space and atmosphere where it is displayed.” She tries to improve the mood by using harmonious colours, experimenting with new textures, using luxury materials, and by implementing architecture in a modern setting.

As an artist, Awad often uses pearls in her work. Which may not be a surprise since throughout history, pearls have played a prominent role in arts and culture. They have been thought of as representing potent concepts such as rarity and purity and artists have always found inspiration and meaning in them. “Art is a reflection of the soul; art is life and life is art,” Awad says. She is accomplished in different forms of art such as abstract (using acrylic and other material), 3D wall art and charcoal and pencil drawings. Professionally, she creates luxury handmade art for interiors. “I can handle big, customised interior projects with guaranteed client satisfaction,” she says proudly. How has being a Palestinian born in the UK and brought up in Finland, affected you as an artist?

My multicultural background profoundly shapes my artistic perspective. Being Palestinian and having grown up in London and Finland, has provided me a unique blend of influences and experiences. This diverse cultural heritage allows me to approach my work with a multifaceted viewpoint, combining elements from different traditions and environments. It enriches my creative process, enabling me to explore themes of identity, displacement and belonging, in nuanced ways.

Can you tell us what links architecture, art and design?

Architecture, art, and design are intrinsically linked through their shared emphasis on form, function and aesthetics. Architecture provides the structural framework, while art often enhances or challenges these structures through visual expression. Design bridges the gap between functionality and aesthetics, ensuring that spaces and objects are both practical and visually engaging. Together, they contribute to the creation of environments that are both functional and inspiring. How do you discover whether something is genuine or fake, to become a subject or not of your art?Determining authenticity involves a combination of research, intuition, and critical analysis. I evaluate the context, origin and emotional resonance of the subject at hand. Genuine subjects often provoke a deeper, more personal response and align with my artistic vision. I also consider the sincerity of the subject’s narrative and its capacity to contribute meaningfully to my work.

How does good art affect the mood of a place it is shown?

Good art has the power to profoundly influence the mood of a space by evoking emotions, sparking introspection, or creating dialogue. Art can transform an environment, making it more dynamic and engaging, or providing a calming and reflective atmosphere. The interaction between art and space can enhance the overall experience of the viewer and the functionality of the environment.

How did you become confident to handle different forms of art such as abstracts, 3D wall art, charcoal, pencil, etc.?

Gaining confidence in various art forms comes from practice, exploration and a willingness to experiment. Each medium offers distinct challenges and opportunities for expression. By dedicating time to study and mastering different techniques, I have developed a versatile skill set. This adaptability allows me to approach each project with the appropriate medium to best convey my artistic intent.

What are the qualities one must have as an interior designer?

An interior designer must possess a keen eye for detail, creativity, and a strong understanding of spatial relationships. Effective communication skills are essential for collaborating with clients to understand their needs. Additionally, knowledge of materials, colour theory and ergonomics is crucial, as well as the ability to stay updated with design trends and technological advancements.

Are you a woman-centric artist? If so, why?

My work often explores themes related to identity and personal experience, including gender dynamics. While I am not exclusively a woman-centric artist, I do delve into issues of gender and representation, reflecting on how societal roles and experiences influence artistic expression. This focus allows me to address broader conversations about identity and experience within my work.

One artwork I have created delicately intertwines pearls with the essence of femininity; it is a piece that radiates elegance and grace. The pearls, subtly integrated into the composition, symbolise purity and refinement, enhancing the portrayal of a woman who embodies strength and sophistication. The soft, lustrous quality of the pearls adds a touch of timeless beauty, reflecting the multifaceted nature of the feminine spirit.

Why do you like pearls? Does jewellery play a role in your life as an artist?

Pearls have a timeless elegance and symbolise various attributes, such as purity and wisdom. Their unique lustre and organic formation resonate with my aesthetic sensibilities. Jewellery, in general, plays a role in my artistic life by offering inspiration and serving as a medium for exploring themes of adornment, identity, and cultural significance. It often adds depth to my artistic expressions and creative process.
