Sense of Persia, an event directed by Sima Ahvaz that showcased Persian culture, was held for the third time in Dubai (Feb. 21 — 22) in Alserkal Avenue. It was dedicated to the exploration and survey of Iranian art, culture and literature, and included performance art. The performance was based on a romantic narrative and was depicted in a musical format with poetic ambience; it provided an emotively rich experience. Called The Invisible Palace, it was an adaptation of the enchanting story of Zarir and Atossa.
It was brought the story to life with illustrations, adding a visually stunning dimension to the piece.
Inclusive of lyrics and vocals, the piece exuded a distinctive charm; Persian culture yet again served as a bridge between tradition and innovation, offering an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of Iranian culture and art through new pathways. Sima Ahvaz is an artist, illustrator and art director, who has spent years in the world of design, ideation, and artistic creation. She has a deep love for the culture and art of her homeland and strives to spark a renaissance in Persian culture and literature through projects rooted in Iranian identity.
Sima Ahvaz is a versatile artist.
One of her most significant achievements is the creation and execution of the Hess-e Parsi campaign and event — an initiative dedicated to introducing Iran’s art, literature and history to the world. It was the most recent edition of this event that was held in Alserkal Avenue and was in celebration of Sepandarmazgan, the Persian Day of Love. Music, art and history intertwined on the occasion, inviting the audience to partake of a rich feast of Persian culture. Sepandarmazgan is an ancient Iranian day of women, with Zoroastrian roots. The deity Spandarmad protected the Earth and the good, chaste and beneficent wife who loved her husband. The festival used to be dedicated to women, and men would give them liberal presents as they rested.
Throughout the years, Sima has continuously strived to reimagine Iran’s ancient love stories and myths with a fresh and modern approach; she brings them to life on stage with musical theatre and creative direction. But Sense of Persia was not limited to a theatrical performance alone — it also embodied the dominating senses of Persian heritage, in this case fragrance, taste, carpets, fashion, jewellery, watches and gold. Each of them was presented with elegance and authenticity, with prestigious Iranian brands enriching the occasion with their presence.
Carpet weaving is an essential part of Persian culture and Iranian art. Within the group of Oriental rugs produced by the countries of the “rug belt”, the Persian carpet stands out by the variety and elaborateness of its manifold designs. The Rug Belt ranges across North Africa, Middle East, Central Asia, Northern India, China, Turkey, Pakistan and Russia. Persian jewellery pieces are known for their intricate designs, the use of precious stones and metals, and the incorporation of cultural symbolism. The use of turquoise, enamel, calligraphy, floral designs, filigree and precious stones such as rubies, sapphires and diamonds combined with intricate designs and cultural symbolism, makes Persian jewellery instantly recognisable, besides being a cherished art form.
Gaz, which formed a part of the culinary offerings at Sense of Persia, is an Iranian nougat that originated in the Isfahan region. It is widely known as Persian Nougat in American and European countries and is made from pistachio, almond kernels, rose-water, egg whites and sap from Persian manna. Persian manna is a species of legume commonly found in western Iran. Sima strives to narrate Iranian stories and archetypes in a contemporary way, combining performance design, music composition, stylish and modern fashion patterns, and poetry inspired by ancient narratives. The works are presented to the world through modern theatrical performances and technology, offering fresher and deeper perspectives on Iranian culture and literature.
She envisions a day when everyone will gain a newer understanding of Iranian cultural identity, which, she feels, will spark no less than a renaissance of Persian culture and art. Her creative vision and a sense of mission motivates her on her journey; she is determined to showcase the brilliance of Iranian culture and art to the world in the best possible way.
