VIDEO: 20-year-old female paraplegic patient walks again with Abu Dhabi’s advanced treatment

A hospital in Abu Dhabi successfully treated a young patient with paraplegia.

The 20-year-old was treated at the Madinat Zayed Hospital, the largest hospital among Al Dhafra Hospitals.

Paraplegia is a partial/ complete paralysis of the lower half of the body.



The condition usually occurs after an injury to the spinal cord or an intracranial hemorrhage.

In other words, it is bleeding between the brain tissue and the skull or within the brain tissue itself that leads to this condition.

Paraplegia affected Yasmin on the right side of her body.

This affected both her upper and lower limbs.

Yasmin’s motor ability was affected, leading to great difficulty in movement.

This was not the only issue. She had difficulty in speech also.

The Physical & Rehabilitation Department at the hospital charted an inclusive treatment plan for Yasmin.

The plan included physiotherapy and speech therapy twice a week.

The treatment was carried out in different phases by the hospital staff.

The first phase focused on muscle strength, mobility, and endurance in the upper and lower limbs.

Phase two was more into developing and building balance.

Apart from this treatment, Yasmin was also learning to improve speech and memory.

Specialist Dr. Radwa Mohamed Mahmoud Awad Gabr thanked Seha for the approach adopted for the treatment.

Yasmin showed positive signs. She regained strength in the muscle and balance.

She slowly started to walk much to the delight of hospital staff and family.

She was speaking slowly but without any difficulty.

The hospital said it would support the patient with the treatment until she achieved good health.
