The Dubai Criminal Court sentenced four people to six months in jail and fined them Dhs270,000 after on charges of stealing a Cadillac worth the same amount of the fine and attempting to export it after renting it from a rent-a-car office in Dubai.
Three of the defendants are still at large. They all will be deported after serving their jail terms.
The case dates back to February 2020 when an employee at a rent-a-car office in Dubai filed a complaint that a vehicle had been stolen by a Gulf national.
According to the complainant’s statements in the investigations, a Gulf national rented a Cadillac for two days for Dhs1,500 and paid a deposit of Dhs5,000 before he left the office but he did not return the vehicle on time.
The complainant added that he tried to call the defendant more than once but the latter did not respond.
In the meantime, the complainant was contacted by a person in charge of monitoring vehicles with tracking devices and told him that a tracking device had been removed from the vehicle, which was near a land port in Abu Dhabi.
A report that the vehicle was stolen was filed accordingly.
A policeman stated in the investigations that a team of detectives were able to locate the vehicle and arrest its Asian driver.
During interrogation the Asian driver told that the Gulf national gave him Dhs6,000 in exchange for transferring the vehicle in another name of a European and that he received the rest of documents from another Gulf national.
The defendant, however, denied any connection to the gang members.
