A horrific crime shook Beirut when a 29-year-old Lebanese man stabbed his mother with a sharp knife in the neck and head in her home in the Chiyah area near Beirut, which led to her death.
The young man Hadi Ibrahim Selim's stabbing of his mother ignited a social media storm among netizens, who were quick to condemn the crime, which was linked to drugs.
A woman who lives near the crime scene said that the perpetrator suffers from schizophrenia, adding that his mother had "presented him to a cleric two weeks ago, but his condition did not improve."
While there was information about the young man's drug use for a while, which led him to a state of hallucination, sources said that the perpetrator had received treatment in a hospital in the region, according to Sky News Arabia.
An eyewitness stated that Hadi was suffering from psychological problems and believed in religious beliefs that were described as "strange", according to a post by one of his friends on "Facebook".
One of the victim's neighbours explained that the young man was suffering from schizophrenia, while his mother considered him to be in hospital treatment, but he did not recover, so she presented him to a religious man for what she thought was a "religious treatment."
Later, Salim was arrested by young men in the area and handed over to the security forces at Al-Ghobeiri police station, south of the capital, after he tried to escape, but he was in a state of extreme lack of concentration and terror.
Local news websites reported that the perpetrator killed his mother while she was performing prayer by repeatedly stabbing her with a sharp knife in the neck and head.
