If you haven’t yet made it to the 43rd annual Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF), now is the time to catch the excitement — especially if you’re a foodie. As the fair wraps up this Sunday, visitors are still pouring in, not only for the books and cultural experiences but for a world of culinary exploration. With global flavours, inventive fusion dishes, and local favourites, here’s a look at some of the unmissable scrumptious dishes that has reinforced SIBF’s reputation as a culinary destination:
The Arigato burger
This Japanese-inspired burger is more than just a meal — it’s a culinary journey. Priced at Dhs48, the Arigato Burger combines a premium wagyu beef patty with American cheddar, Japanese teriyaki ponzu sauce, Kewpie mayo, and a layer of shimeji mushrooms. “Every bite transports you to Japan,” says John Mapagu, the burger chef at SIBF.
Tunacado sandwich and ginger shot
For those craving something light yet packed with flavour, Joe & The Juice’s Tunacado sandwich hits the mark. Combining creamy tuna mousse, fresh avocado, ripe tomatoes, and vegan pesto, this Dh39 sandwich has been a popular choice for visitors looking to fuel up between cultural talks. The tangy ginger shot, priced at Dhs16, adds a refreshing kick, perfect for keeping energised as you explore the fair.
Korean corn dogs and bibimbap
Korean street food continues to be a crowd-puller, with Meokja’s corn dogs standing out. Variations like chicken and cheese, super cheese, and a daring flaming Cheetos with cheese, priced at Dhs30. These crispy, gooey treats are perfect for on-the-go snacking. For a fuller meal, pick the Bibimbap (Dhs45). “Our dishes are about sharing the warmth and togetherness of Korean cuisine,” says John Paul, a Meokja representative.
Belgian strawberry treats
Bringing a touch of Wimbledon to Sharjah, Chocolate Affair’s strawberries dipped in Belgian chocolate have been a surprise hit. Available for Dhs35 or Dhs25, depending on portion size, these sweet bites offer a sophisticated treat that’s perfect for fair-goers seeking a little indulgence.
Chocolate box and hot chocolate
Newcomer Clouds has introduced fair-goers to high-quality French and Belgian chocolates, with decadent options like their signature Roche and Pistachio chocolates. Their Dhs10 hot chocolate has become a comforting staple for visitors wanting a cosy drink as they stroll through the stalls.
Bottled karkadeh and speciality coffees
Bringing a distinctly Arabic touch to the fair, Sbr’s hibiscus-based karkadeh (Dhs35) has been a refreshing hit. For coffee enthusiasts, their iced toasted marshmallow latte (Dhs20) and cortado (Dhs18) add variety. “It’s about capturing the cultural essence of the region while giving people something memorable,” explains Razan Suliman, a partner.
Chicken sando
For those not looking for a beef option, GOAT Burger’s Chicken Sando has been a favourite. This fried chicken sandwich, seasoned to perfection and topped with slaw, spicy mayo, and pickles, offers a crunchy, flavourful bite that has fair-goers raving. Priced at Dhs38, it’s a perfect pick-me-up meal.
Traditional Nabulsi kunafah
Nothing says Middle Eastern dessert quite like Nabulsi Kunafah, a sweet, gooey treat that has been drawing crowds with its blend of crispy pastry and stretchy cheese, all soaked in sugary syrup.
Arabic karkadeh with passion fruit
For an extra twist on the traditional karkadeh, Sbr offers a unique combination of hibiscus and passion fruit for an additional Dhs2. The tartness of the hibiscus combined with the tropical notes of passion fruit creates a vibrant, refreshing drink that has visitors coming back for more.
Flat burger and other local food truck treats
Not to be missed are the flat burgers and other delicious snacks served up by the local food trucks dotting the fairgrounds.
This weekend marks the final days to experience SIBF 2024’s incredible culinary lineup. Whether you’re in the mood for a gourmet fusion dish or a familiar comfort treat, make sure to stop by and taste the flavours that have been as much of a draw as the books themselves.
