Liverpool star and global football icon Mohamed Salah captivated his fans as he took the stage at the 43rd Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF) on Sunday in Expo Centre Sharjah.
The humble footballer spoke about culture, his humble beginnings in Cairo neighbourhood to becoming a global icon.
Prior to the starting of the event, Salah-addicts snowballed around the venue giving a tough time to the security personnel.
Salah appeared in front of the jam-packed hall to deafening cheers of “Salah... Salah... I love you.” Gulf Today noticed that Salah fans were not only young, they belonged to all segments of the society.
Known worldwide for his speed, precision, and resilience on the pitch, Salah said how reading and learning have been pivotal to his success, underscoring the importance of mental pursuits alongside athletic ambition.
He revealed the circumstances that led to his attainment of international renown, additionally disclosing the role that literature has played in influencing his sporting career.
Salah stated that he reads extensively, emphasizing the importance of books in shaping one's personality and worldview.
In his talk with the host, Salah shared an inspiring mix of personal reflections and universal themes, exploring the path that led him from a young dreamer in Egypt to one of the most celebrated football players in the world.
Salah told the audience, “In life, nothing comes easy. One needs to have discipline and consistency to achieve his dreams.” He also said “one needs to navigate through the intense pressures of elite sport and life and things with calmness.”
Salah said, “Not every day on the field is your best day. Sometimes the performance is not up to the mark... then the fear of pressure creeps in. Here reading shapes you. The more you read, the more your self-confidence builds up. It is reading that ultimately contributed to the development of myself as a player.
“We at the club read about optimal training regimens, nutritional guidelines, and the importance of developing healthy habits. You know, those good reads are important for everyone, not just sportspersons.”
Born and raised in Egypt, Salah began his professional career at Al Mokawloon Al Arab SC before making his mark in Europe with clubs like Basel, Chelsea, Fiorentina, and Roma, ultimately joining Liverpool FC in 2017.
Over the years, his accomplishments have included Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles, PFA Player of the Year awards, Golden Boots, a Playmaker of the Season Award and Puskas Award.
