Nine passengers, out of 83 Asians and Arabs, died after a bus carrying workers overturned in Khorfakkan on Sunday evening due to a brake failure.
Specialized teams from Sharjah Police, in co-operation and co-ordination with the concerned authorities, managed to reach the scene of the accident in record time and rescue 73 passengers by providing first aid to the injured and transporting them to hospitals for the necessary medical care.
According to Brigadier Dr. Ali Al Kai Al Hamoudi, Director of Eastern Region Police Department, the operations room at Sharjah Police received a report on Sunday evening about a bus carrying workers overturning in Wadi Washi Square located at the entrance to Khorfakkan City.
Specialized police, civil defence and national ambulance teams rushed to the scene of the accident to find that some of the passengers were killed and others were injured, he said.
Al Hamoudi pointed out that the teams started taking immediate measures to rescue the injured, who sustained multiple injuries and provide them with the necessary first aid before taking them to hospitals for comprehensive health care.
Initial investigations indicated that failure of the bus brakes was the main cause of the accident, he said, adding that the driver lost control and consequently the bus overturned at the right exit of the entrance to Khorfakkan.
