Jumaa Al Majid Company, the exclusive agent for 'Hyundai' in the UAE, has announced the receipt and operation of the first two buses powered by clean hydrogen energy, as part of the public transport network in the capital, Abu Dhabi.
Hyundai buses of the 'Elik City FC' and 'Universe FC' models are participating in the Green Bus Programme launched by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC), which will continue until the end of 2025.
The programme includes the operation of electric and hydrogen-powered buses on internal and regional routes, where the Hyundai 'Elik City FC' bus is operated on route number 65 within the city, while the 'Universe FC' bus is operated on the regional route number 160.
Sulaiman Al Zaben, Head of Hyundai UAE, said, 'We are proud of our partnership with the ITC in this significant step towards innovative and sustainable mobility solutions. We look forward to achieving our shared ambitions to lead the transition to emission-free transportation in the country."
The Green Bus Programme in Abu Dhabi aims to study and select the best technologies and solutions in the fields of hydrogen and electric energy, and provide them to residents, visitors, and public transport users, through collaboration with international government bodies and bus manufacturing companies, ensuring that these solutions are suitable for the local environment, as indicated by Al Zaben.
The programme includes improving infrastructure and developing the skills of Emirati cadres through specialised training programmes in the field of hydrogen and electric buses. It also provides opportunities for practical training outside the country, contributing to building national expertise which supports the transition to a sustainable future.
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority has announced that its Green Hydrogen project has produced around 90 tonnes of green hydrogen since it was launched in May 2021.
Most of this hydrogen was used to produce more than one-gigawatt hour (GWh) of green energy, reducing about 450 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
