The Traffic and Patrols Directorate of the Abu Dhabi Police urged motorists not to stop in the middle of the road for any reason whatsoever and advised them to go to the nearest exit to ensure their safety and the safety of other road users. The move seeks to avoid serious and dangerous accidents and prevent traffic congestion.
To illustrate this, as part of the “Safe Road' campaign” Abu Dhabi Police, in collaboration with the Control and Follow-up Centre, broadcast a video of an accident caused by a minivan suddenly stopping in the middle of the road. The video shows the occupants of the vehicle getting down and perilously crossing the road amid busy traffic.
Soon afterwards, a speeding car rams into the back of the van, damaging it in the process. The vehicle skids into the next lane, narrowly missing being hit by a car from behind which slams the brakes.
The Directorate emphasised the importance of not being distracted by anything other than the road and focusing completely on the road while driving. This helps the motorist stay alert to any vehicle showing errant behaviour or developing a malfunction and acting in a timely and safe manner, explaining that lack of attention in this specific situation can cause accidents.
