A 54-year-old Italian tourist sustained a severe tear in the main aorta of the heart, resulting in reduced blood flow to vital organs and limbs.
This condition, classified as a high-risk cardiac procedure, necessitated urgent medical intervention to preserve life.
A complex surgical procedure lasting 12 hours was performed by specialised medical teams at Saudi German Hospital - Dubai.
The procedure involved the replacement of the ascending aorta and part of the aortic arch, with the aim of restoring normal blood flow and reconstructing the main blood vessels.
As posited by Dr Basil Al Zamkan, Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Saudi German Hospital - Dubai, the aortic dissection is a potentially fatal condition, characterised by the formation of a tear in the inner layer of the aorta. This can result in significant internal bleeding, which, if not promptly addressed, can lead to sudden cardiac death.
Patients with a family history of the condition, or with hypertension, can be identified through echocardiography, thus facilitating the early detection of those at risk and helping to prevent complications.
In his capacity as Regional CEO of the Saudi German Hospital Group - UAE, Dr Ahmed Issa has confirmed that the hospital is distinguished by its provision of critical care and emergency treatment, thereby ensuring that patients receive the latest treatments in life-threatening cases.
The tourist received comprehensive post-surgical care from an integrated medical team, facilitating a swift and complete recovery within a period of three weeks prior to his return to his country of origin.
