The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) in Abu Dhabi has announced a series of regulations aimed at enhancing the quality of life in the city and maintaining the cleanliness of public places. The DMT has called upon members of the public to adhere to these regulations in order to ensure a sustainable environment.
The regulations stipulate penalties for specific forms of uncivilised conduct, including the disposal of cigarette butts outside designated containers. According to the regulations, the financial penalty for the first time of discarding cigarette butts outside the designated containers is Dh500, increasing to Dh1,000 in the event of subsequent violations, and escalating to Dh2,000 for the third offence and subsequent iterations.
The department has also established financial penalties for the disposal of food and drink waste in locations other than those designated for such disposal. The first offence will incur a fine of Dhs500, the second offence will incur a fine of Dhs1,000, and any subsequent offences will incur a fine of Dhs2,000 or more.
In the event of the dumping or abandonment of waste in areas not designated for such disposal, the financial penalty shall be initiated at a base amount of Dhs1,000 for the initial offence. Subsequent violations shall incur escalating fines, with the second offence resulting in a penalty of Dhs2,000 and each subsequent violation will incur a fine of Dhs4,000 or more.
