The Kerala High Court has expressed concern about the mental state of the country's youth, describing it as "astonishing and disturbing," with some even posing a threat to their parents' lives.
Justice PV Kunhikrishnan made this observation while granting bail to a man arrested for allegedly attempting to kill his mother following her request for his release.
Sammil, 25, attacked his mother after she refused to give him money to celebrate the New Year, resulting in serious injuries with the intent to kill, as reported by the police. She sustained 12 knife wounds across her body.
In just two months, Kerala has reported 70 murders, 30 of which occurred within families. The police attribute the increase in these killings to rising substance abuse.
"The statement of the mother will further sadden everybody. (It) contains the tears of this unfortunate mother,” Justice Kunhikrishnan said in his order.
"I am sure the wounds on her body might not have healed. But her love for her son overtakes the wounds.”
He said he was forced to grant him bail thinking about the fate and trauma the mother faced. "A mother’s love for her son is like a rose - it will bloom forever,” he added.
After his mother refused to give him money, he left the house and returned with a knife. He then inflicted wounds on her head, face, and hands in an attempt to kill her.
The police arrested the man on January 1, and he has been in custody awaiting trial since that time.
His lawyer stated that he would comply with any conditions the court might impose if he were granted bail.
When his bail application was presented, the court decided it would not grant bail unless the mother stated that she had no grievances against her son.
Subsequently, she filed an affidavit affirming that she had no objection to his release on bail. The investigating officer also verified her statement.
"There is no purpose in blaming the young generation. Society and parents should watch them closely and monitor their relationship with good people,” the court order said.
"No purpose will be served by retaining this youngster in detention to continue the trauma of his mother. He can be released on bail after imposing stringent conditions.”
The court instructed the man to cooperate fully with the investigation. He is not allowed to contact witnesses and make any direct or indirect threats, inducements, or promises to dissuade them.
If he engages in any criminal activity, his mother can report it to the police, which could result in his bail being revoked.
