The efforts of anti-begging teams in the Sharjah Police, in collaboration with community members, have resulted in the arrest of several beggars during the first half of the Holy Month of Ramadan, as part of the police's awareness campaign "Begging is a Crime, Giving is a Responsibility," aimed at reducing the phenomenon of begging, according to Brigadier General Omar Al Shamsi, Director of the Special Tasks Department.
Brigadier General Al Shamsi stated that field teams arrested 87 men and 20 women during the campaign, and seized cash amounts exceeding Dhs50,000. He praised the vital role of the public in reporting beggars through the numbers (901) and (80040) and identifying their locations.
He explained that raising community awareness about the methods used by beggars effectively contributes to reducing negative behaviours, including exploiting public sympathy to collect money through illegal means.
Al Shamsi called on those wishing to donate to direct their donations to officially recognised charitable associations and institutions in the country, to ensure they reach the actual needy and not to respond to beggars, and to report them immediately.
