Light vehicles were the most common type of vehicles involved in traffic accidents on UAE roads last year, with 3,115 accidents recorded, resulting in 223 deaths and 3,294 injuries, statistics from the Ministry of Interior revealed.
Motorcycles came in the second place, with 842 accidents resulting in 67 deaths and 1,531 injuries, while heavy trucks came in the third place, causing 321 accidents last year resulting in 40 deaths and 251 injuries.
Light buses (less than 27 passengers) came in the fourth place, with 126 accidents resulting in 10 deaths and 201 injuries, while heavy buses (27 passengers or more) came in the fifth place, causing 112 accidents last year resulting in 17 deaths and 277 injuries.
According to the statistics, bicycles ranked sixth, causing 90 accidents last year that resulted in 10 deaths and 174 injuries, while scooters ranked seventh, recording 58 accidents that resulted in 3 deaths and 100 injuries and electric bikes ranked eighth, with 47 accidents that resulted in 6 deaths and 69 injuries.
As many as 66 causes were behind the accidents that took place on the country’s roads last year. These included entering the street before ensuring it was clear, failing to give priority to pedestrians, driving in the opposite direction, reversing without ensuring the road was clear.
They also included failing to obey traffic signals, distraction, jumping a red light, sudden swerving, a tyre blowout, failing to keep lane, tailgating, negligence and inattention, speeding without taking road conditions into account, reckless driving, overtaking without caution and sudden stopping, among others.
As far as the causes of traffic accidents were concerned, the statistics revealed that sudden swerving was the most prominent cause of accidents in 2024 with 827 accidents nationwide, while distraction came second with 776 accidents during the same period.
