Based on a decision by the Sharjah Executive Council (SEC), the specialised transportation service for the elderly has been transferred from the Sharjah Police General Headquarters to the Department of Social Services.
According to Kholoud Al Ali, Director of the Elderly Services Centre, the service aims to enhance the quality of life for seniors by facilitating their access to healthcare facilities, reducing the risk of health complications due to delayed treatment, and supporting their independence in safe and comfortable mobility.
This service differs from emergency services, which handle critical and life-threatening cases under the National Ambulance’s jurisdiction.
The non-emergency transportation service focuses on providing specially equipped vehicles with wheelchairs, medical beds, oxygen support systems, and trained staff to ensure safety and comfort during transit, Kholoud explained.
She noted that there are currently 23 specialised vehicles available, including 5 dedicated to serving the Eastern Region, while the rest operate within Sharjah city. The service is available 24/7 throughout the week, she said adding that the service is essential for individuals requiring special care during transportation, such as the elderly, bedridden patients, and people of determination, within Sharjah or other emirates.
