The nursery, gardens, and trees sector in the UAE is home to the most expensive tree of its kind, priced at Dhs1.3 million.
The tree, known as the Baobab (scientific name: Adansonia), is one of the most unusual plants in the world.
It can grow to massive sizes, and carbon dating suggests it can live for over 3,000 years. It is also referred to as the “bottle tree”, “monkey bread tree,” or “converted tree.”
Engineer Saeed, Sales Manager at GREEN TREND in Dubai, noted that the tree currently weighs 35 tonnes and is estimated to be around 700 years old.
He added it was imported from South Africa and now is one of the largest trees in the Gulf region. Saeed highlighted that the Baobab tree can store up to 100,000 litres of water internally. Its fruits are rich in calcium and can be eaten or used to produce oil.
Baobab trees are also found in Dhofar Governorate of Oman, with one notable tree in Wilayat of Dhalkut gaining fame for its immense size. It is one of approximately 200 Baobab trees in the governorate, known for their longevity and rarity.
Other rare trees available for sale include ancient olive and cactus varieties, priced up to Dhs500,000, with ages estimated in the hundreds of years.
These living icons are sought after by those looking to adorn their homes with unique, attention-grabbing, and awe-inspiring natural wonders.
