It is true that teams do grow from strength to strength and also get pulverised, which is natural. But our team, especially the batsmen, were found wanting on many occasions. It was our bowlers who were instrumental for many victories recently (“Stop bashing, let us face the fact,” Nov.12, Gulf Today website).
Even during the recent 3-0 series loss to New Zealand, it was the batsmen who failed to score runs to give a cushion for our bowlers, who always restricted the Black Caps to a reasonable total. Anyway, as averred by the author, we must realise that the old order has to be changed and a new order is due. Ironically our Cricket Board and selectors are not quite ready to act.
We feel, as in the case of other cricket boards, it is time our Board too comes out with 3 teams to play each format of the game. Only exceptionally talented and performing players should play all the three formats. Above all that, we feel the players’ remuneration should also be pruned and paid purely based on their performance on the field of play. But who will bell these cats?
