To be frank, since Gautam Gambhir himself was a top order batsman, there is no need to have a separate batting coach. In fact it was the inability of our Cricket Board, who just followed the instructions of Gautam Gambhir in the selection of the batting and bowling coaches, which led to our batsmen failures, not only against New Zealand but also Down Under. Abhishek Nayyar himself was an average batsman during his playing days. The Board members should have been wise enough to know who were the best batsmen during the past decade and should have selected the best amongst them and not at the whims and fancies of the head coach.
Since Abhishek Nayyar played for Mumbai, alongwith Rohit Sharma, I don’t think Rohit & Kohli would have obeyed him. Even Pant would not have followed his advice. The batting and bowling coaches should have played at least 25 Test matches. In fact, even the BCCI members should consist of only eminent past cricketers and not any political leader or his kith and kin. Look at the progress of Indian cricket during the captaincy of our team by Sourav Ganguly since 2001 and during this presidenship of BCCI. We need tough cricketers like him to improve our team performance.
