The people of India should never allow the dormancy of democracy because it is the last and most powerful weapon in the hands of the governed to fix the misdeeds of those governing. It is never paltry and wanting before the demands of an ethically nuanced government.

It’s the only answer when the elected gradually turn dictatorial in their actions and ignore the tears of those looking up to them for simple needs of life.

Also, democracy keeps the governed safe as they exercise their right to throw out poor performers and fraudsters because the ballot is secret.

The handsome victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Delhi Assembly election is yet another instance of democracy coming to the rescue of the unhappy lot. 

They had voted the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to power hoping it would change the ways of governance for good. They weren’t totally wrong. The AAP took off in style, remained in that efficient mode for years, but with time cracks started to show at certain levels because well-settled power, like a scantily dressed seductress, breeds lust. And the AAP was no different.

The secretive and angry voters waited for their turn, which came on February 8, 2025. They thundered back. It was an unsparing sledge-hammer strike. It brought down the party’s founder and managed to expose its questionable ways in one single punch. Only democracy could create such a simple and concrete and watertight approach to tackling years of pain, often excruciating and lethal. And what makes it heartwarming is one does not need anybody’s permission to act. At the booth the voter is king.

Without the process of election we would have still been living among sadistic people, who threw human beings before lions by way of sport and chained the helpless and the weak and the hungry till Abraham Lincoln intervened.
