Shabab Al Ahli will look to extend their lead with a victory over Al Jazira when the two side face off in the top of the table clash at the Round 16 of the Arab Gulf League on Thursday.
Table-toppers Shabab Al Ahli have a nine-point lead over second, third and fourth place Sharjah, Al Ain and Al Jazira — who all have 27 points each — respectively.
Coach Rodolfo Arruabarrena said: “It is an important game and we face one of the best teams. Both the teams have good strikers, who are capable of scoring goals. Both the teams know each the other well. I hope to it will be a tough game.”
He continued: “We always strive to win every game we play. I hope we can put up a strong fight and get the three points so that we continue to lead and maintain the difference in points between us and the other teams, who are aspiring to advance in the ranking.”
He warned his players against complacency and suggested that the league is still wide open.
“The game is definitely important, but it is like the rest of the matches in the tournament. For me, there is still a lot to play for in the league. There are 30 points up for grab for all the teams.”
He played down the criticism of his team after being held to a goal-less draw in the previous round.
“I don’t care much about the opinions of others and criticism of the team. We know our team’s performance when they are good or bad.
“The last two games were not the best for us, but we have some important points that make the difference with the rest of the competitors. I advise the players not to be affected by who is saying what.”
Speaking about the availability of the players, he said: “Ahmed Khalil will train with the team from today, and we will work to prepare him for the upcoming matches. Leonardo is still in the hospital, nursing his niggling injury.”
