Poland players steal show at Fujairah Chess Endurance C’ship

Sheikh Mohammed Bin Hamad Bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, with the winners of the Fujairah Chess Endurance Championship.

Chess players from Poland completed a clean sweep after claiming the top three spots at the third edition of the Fujairah Chess Endurance Championship and World Solving Chess Composition Championship held recently.

Kacper Piorun, a 29-year-old from Lowicz, outsmarted his rivals on the chessboard to finish on top while Piotr Murdzia and Piotr Gorski took silver and bronze.

Sheikh Mohammed Bin Hamad Bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Crown Prince of Fujairah, crowned the winners of the championship which was organised by the Fujairah Chess and Culture Club at the Novotel Fujairah Hotel.

Sheikh Mohammed praised the level of the tournament. He also honoured the tournament organisers and the officials of the International world Federation (WFCC).

Earlier, Russia’s 12-year-old Bunin Serafim won the first place in the second category while Egyptian Samir Ramiz finished second. Emirati Abdul Rahman Al Taher clinched the third place.

In the third category, Emirati Rouda Essa Al Serkal won the first place with full score, followed by India’s Sharon Rafael. His compatriot MS Harshavardhini finished third.

Over 300 men and women chess players from the UAE and across the globe competed in the event which carried a prize purse of Dhs140,000.

Dignitaries who graced the presentation ceremony were Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Bin Shakhbut Al Nahyan, President of the Asian Chess Federation, Sheikh Abdulaziz Bin Saud Al Mualla, President of the Arab Chess Federation, and patron Sheikh Abdullah Bin Hamad Bin Saif Al Sharqi.

Dr Abdullah Al Barakat, Chairman of the Organising Committee and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Fujairah Chess and Culture Club, thanked the Crown Prince for his unwavering support to the Fujairah Chess Endurance Championship.

“The Crown Prince of Fujairah’s support paved the way for its continuity and success,” said Barakat.
