Rising stars shine as Fujairah Squash Grand Prix fuels passion for sport

Squash is experiencing a surge in popularity at the club level across the UAE, a trend beautifully highlighted by the 2024 Fujairah Junior Squash Grand Prix 1, held at the Tennis & Country Club Fujairah on Saturday.

This prestigious event not only captivated participants but also drew a lively audience, reflecting the growing enthusiasm and passion for the sport in the nation.

The girls' section, a vibrant tapestry of youthful energy, unfolded with a series of thrilling matches that captivated the hearts of spectators.

Maya Ahmed Aly Rafie, a budding star, emerged winner in the Under 11 category, her victory a testament to her unwavering determination and exceptional skill.

Maya shone in a nail-biting contest, narrowly edging out Layla Kortam to claim the title.

In the Under-13 division, Advikaa Vardhan, who triumphed over Maya. Advikaa’s impressive technique and tactical brilliance secured her a well-deserved victory, marking a pivotal moment in her blossoming squash career.

Her winning streak continued as she entered the Under-15 category, where her mastery of the racket once again proved superior. She faced a formidable challenge from Ahana Shah but emerged victorious in an intense match that kept the audience enthralled.

In the Under-19 category, Antara Shah claimed the title in a tightly contested showdown against her sister, Ahana.

The sibling rivalry added an extra layer of excitement, with both players demonstrating exceptional skill, grit, and determination, making it a memorable climax to the girls’ competitions.

The boys' categories, no less captivating, showcased a wealth of emerging talent. Aley Fathi, a young prodigy, shone brightly in the U-9 category, his victory a harbinger of great things to come.

Alden Fernandes, a rising star, claimed the Under 11 title, while Zain Fathi, his older brother, secured the Under 13 title. Aboubakr Ahmed Tarek claimed the Under 15 and Under 17 titles.

Avyay Jain, a promising talent, rounded out the boys' categories with a victory in the Under 19 category.

Adbul Ghafour Behrozian, Chairman of The Tennis & Country Club Fujairah (TCCF), underscored the tournament’s profound significance, stating: "As squash continues to gain remarkable momentum throughout the UAE, the club remains unwavering in its commitment to nurturing this rising passion and expanding the sport’s reach.

“With continued support and enthusiastic participation, the future of squash in the region gleams with promise. Events like the Fujairah Squash Grand Prix are pivotal to cultivating its growth and ensuring its enduring success,” he added.

The tournament was graced by the presence of UAE Squash Association officials, including Secretary General Najib Salem and El Sherbini, both of whom attended the thrilling matches and support the athletes.

Tournament Director Jacques Harmse emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “This is a unique and special opportunity for the top players across the UAE to come together, enjoy the sport, form new friendships, and, of course, compete for the titles.”

His words capture the essence of camaraderie and competition that the tournament promotes, making it a standout event in the squash calendar.

The Tennis & Country Club Fujairah has garnered widespread praise for its outstanding facilities, a sentiment echoed by Hania Reggi, General Manager of the club.
