The UAE hockey season has officially kicked off with electrifying matches held at the Dubai Mall Ice Rink, Al Ain, and Abu Dhabi Ice Rinks.
Once considered an unconventional sport in the desert, ice hockey has steadily gained popularity, captivating the hearts of both locals and expatriates.
In a testament to its growing appeal, Emirates Sports Group is offering free access to all residents and visitors, inviting them to witness this exciting spectacle firsthand.
As a unique winter sport in the Middle East, ice hockey offers a dynamic experience for both sports enthusiasts and tourists.
Games are hosted every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 8:30 PM across different UAE venues.
The 2024/2025 Emirates Ice Hockey League (EIHL) season has commenced with great fanfare, led by the Dubai Mighty Camels—a pioneering team synonymous with hockey excellence in the Middle East.
Founded nearly two decades ago, the Camels boast a legacy of inspiring expatriate and Emirati players alike. Under the visionary leadership of Vladimir Burdun, founder and CEO of Emirates Sports Group and Chairman of the Dubai Mighty Camels, ice hockey has transitioned from a niche pastime to a mainstream sport.
Burdun's initiatives include the creation of the Emirates Sports Hotel and Apartments, a premier sports-centric destination, and the anticipated launch of the region's first professional ice rink in 2025.
"Hockey in the Middle East is more than just a sport—it's a symbol of transformation," Burdun remarked.
"Developing a winter sport in such an unlikely environment showcases the power of vision and determination. It reflects the UAE's innovative spirit and commitment to achieving global excellence. My dream is to see Middle Eastern nations unite to form a league that competes internationally, setting new standards from the desert."
Ice hockey's journey in the UAE began modestly with expatriates sharing their passion for the sport at makeshift rinks. The formation of the Dubai Mighty Camels in 1994 marked a pivotal moment, establishing the region's first organized hockey team. What started as a gathering of enthusiasts has evolved into a professional sport, with the Camels clinching five championships, including their latest victory in 2021.
The Emirates Ice Hockey League, established in 2009 under the governance of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) and the support of UAE sports authorities, has played a critical role in formalizing competitions and nurturing local talent. Today, the EIHL features six competitive teams and serves as a launch pad for emerging players.
Since 2018, under Burdun's presidency, the EIHL has grown into a professional league attracting international talent and strengthening the UAE's position as a hub for winter sports. The UAE national team's impressive achievements—three World Championship titles in various divisions and a third-place finish in Division 2A at the 2023 World Championship—are a testament to the league's success.
As Emirates Sports Group extends its reach into GCC countries, the dream of a unified Middle Eastern hockey league draws closer, showcasing the region's ability to excel in unexpected arenas.
