The Zayed and Rashid Initiative Cup, sponsored by Shadwell, lived up to billing as the captivating feature left spectators at Jebel Ali Racecourse on the edge of their seats.
In a spellbinding showdown, the Musabbeh Al Mheiri-trained Asad Zabeel emerged the winner after prevailing in a nail-biting finish.
In a breathtaking final surge, Asad Zabeel edged out his rival by the slimmest of margins — a mere nose — claiming victory in a time of 1:25.87 over the 1400-metre course.
From the moment the gates sprang open, the race turned into a gripping duel between Asad Zabeel and Mawthog. The Michael Costa-trained gelding seized an early lead, setting a blistering pace and commanding the field with authority.
Yet, as the race neared its end, Shadwell’s Asad Zabeel, under seasoned Silvestre De Sousa, summoned an extraordinary burst of speed.
The atmosphere crackled with anticipation as both the horses thundered toward the finish line, neck and neck.
“Delighted to have a large number of racegoers and the success of the Zayed and Rashid Initiative Cup,” said Mohamed Al Ahmed, General Manager of Jebel Ali Racecourse.
“We were deeply honoured to align ourselves with the #ZayedAndRashid campaign initiated by Brand Dubai.
“In the spirit of this occasion, we introduced the prestigious Zayed and Rashid Initiative Cup as a part of our concept-driven race meetings.
“I am happy to witness a magnificent gathering of people at the racecourse, joining us in vibrant unity to celebrate this remarkable initiative. Their presence infused the event with energy and joy, transforming the occasion into a true festival of togetherness and pride,” Ahmed added.
Bouncing back, Costa swiftly regained his stride, following an impressive showing by Yotarid, donning the dominant yellow silks of Sheikh Ahmed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum in the Emirates Airline Cup.
The Irish-bred under Ben Coen exhibited flawless rhythm and focus, surging ahead to clinch the win in an impressive time of just a hair’s breadth ahead of the fierce competition.
Hot on Yotarid’s heels was Mheiri’s Haasim, with Daniel Tudhope in the iron. The margin between them was agonisingly narrow— highlighting the incredible pace and competitive spirit of the race.
It was the second win on the card for Costa and Jebel Ali Stables as Rammay, a promising two-year-old colt, won the 2yo Stakes earlier.
Sadh Dahman, Sales Support Manager at Emirates, was elated to attend the races, immersing himself in the vibrant festivities surrounding the racecourse.
“I was enthralled by the electric atmosphere and the spirit of unity on display. I revelled in the excitement of the event, cherishing the unforgettable experience of witnessing such a thrilling race in the heart of a jubilant celebration,” he said.
Waqet, a 6-year-old gelding trained by Marwan Al Baidhaei, stole the show in the Commercial Bank of Dubai Stakes, sponsored by Commercial Bank of Dubai.
Guided by jockey De Sousa, Waqet delivered a masterclass. From the outset, his powerful strides and unwavering focus set the tone for a commanding victory.
Aisha Almazrouei, the Head of Human Resources and Emiratisation at Commercial Bank of Dubai, said, “We were delighted to be part of such a remarkable initiative. The Zayed and Rashid Cup, marking the UAE’s National Day celebrations, embodies the spirit of unity, pride, and excellence that defines our nation.
“Our deepest gratitude goes to Mohammed Al Ahmed for envisioning such an initiative, bringing this extraordinary event to life. It is initiatives like these that celebrate our heritage,” she added.
The action began with the Porsche Cup AF, where Muhem produced a captivating performance under jockey Alexandre da Silva.
Mheiri also enjoyed the double with Symbol of Power, producing a stellar performance in the Al Shafar Investment Stakes, sponsored by Al Shafar Group. The Umm Suqeim Stakes brought the curtains down on the third meeting of the season at Jebel Ali Racecourse after Kibo Misaki took the breathtaking finale, narrowly edging out the Alsayef.
