Alexei Popyrin of Australia, with his eyes glistening with nostalgia, etched a fairytale victory into the annals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Saturday—an event that had witnessed the very beginning of his tennis journey.
From the humbling days of being a ball kid to conquering the doubles title alongside India's Yuki Bhambri, Popyrin's triumph came full circle in an emotional and hard-fought final. The duo defeated the formidable pair of Henry Patten from Great Britain and Harri Heliövaara from Finland, sealing the victory 3-6, 7-6 (14-12), 10/8.
Popyrin’s triumph at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium has been an immensely emotional journey, one that stirred a wave of cherished memories. As he stood victorious on the very courts where his dreams first began to take shape, the moment felt like a beautiful crescendo, evoking reflections of the past and the incredible path that had led him here.
Reflecting on his journey, the 25-year-old Australian couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed by the significance of the moment.
“It’s unbelievable,” Popyrin said, his voice filled with emotion. “I’ve been coming to this tournament since I was a kid, watching the matches, and playing in many junior tournaments here. To now be holding the trophy—it’s like a dream come true.”
His connection with the tournament ran deep, recalling the time in 2009 when he had the opportunity to work as a ball kid, exchanging a few playful shots with tennis legend Jim Courier.
The world No. 27 from Australia, born to Russian parents, was just eight years old when his family relocated to Dubai for a few years due to his father's work commitments. Though they eventually moved on, Popyrin's heart remained tethered to the Emirate, where deep and lasting roots had taken hold. In this vibrant city, he not only honed his tennis skills but also found love—meeting his girlfriend during his school days in Dubai, a bond that, like the city itself, has remained steadfast and enduring.
As a professional, Popyrin’s bond with the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships only grew stronger. The organisers granted him a wildcard entry in 2021.
“This tournament means a lot to me,” Popyrin continued. “Coming back here is always special, and winning a title—whether in singles or doubles—is something I’ll always cherish. It’s been an unbelievable week.”
