Al Ain has further strengthened its position on the global chess map after winning the bid to host the fourth edition of the World Junior Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships U20. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) officially approved Al Ain’s hosting bid, marking another significant international sporting achievement that reflects the growing stature of the UAE and the emirate of Abu Dhabi in hosting and organizing major world-class championships.
The championships will take place in Al Ain from November 1 to 7, 2026, organized by Al Ain Chess and Mind Games Club in cooperation with FIDE and the UAE Chess Federation.
The global chess community will turn its attention to Al Ain as promising young talents from around the world gather to compete for four world championship titles in rapid and blitz chess.
Al Ain’s successful hosting bid represents another milestone in the city’s distinguished record of organizing international sporting events. It highlights the expertise, capabilities, and infrastructure that qualify Al Ain to host major international competitions, as well as the important role played by UAE sports institutions in strengthening the country's presence on the global sporting stage.
The fourth edition of the championships carries particular international significance. The inaugural edition was held in Italy, Europe, in 2023, followed by Uzbekistan in 2024 and Peru, South America, in 2025. The championships now return to Asia through Al Ain, United Arab Emirates, in 2026, reflecting their expanding geographical reach and growing worldwide interest in rapid and blitz chess.
The event comprises four separate world championship competitions: the World Junior Rapid Chess Championship (Open), the World Junior Rapid Chess Championship (Girls), the World Junior Blitz Chess Championship (Open), and the World Junior Blitz Chess Championship (Girls). Four world champions will consequently be crowned in the Under-20 category, following competitions that demand quick thinking, precision, tactical skills, and the ability to make decisive moves under intense time pressure.
The championships hold particular importance as a major international platform for discovering emerging chess talents and developing future world champions. Rapid and blitz chess have also gained increasing popularity due to their excitement, spectator appeal, and strong media potential, alongside their growing prominence on FIDE’s international calendar.
As part of the preparations for the event, the Organizing Committee will hold a press conference on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain. The conference will unveil the championship details, technical and organizational programs, and the latest preparations for the highly anticipated international event.
It is worth noting that Al Ain has a distinguished history of hosting major world and continental chess championships. Among its most notable events were the World Cities Chess Championship for the Sheikh Zayed Cup in 2012, followed by the World Youth Chess Championships in 2013, covering the Under-8, Under-10, Under-12, Under-14, Under-16, and Under-18 categories for boys and girls.
The city also hosted the Asian Chess Club Champions League in 2008 and 2016, the Asian Continental Individual Chess Championship in 2015 and 2025, the Asian Youth Chess Championships in 2007 and 2023, and the Asian Amateur Chess Championship in 2024.
These achievements demonstrate Al Ain’s extensive organizational experience and longstanding commitment to hosting major international chess events. They also reflect the city’s continued efforts to strengthen its international standing, with the 2026 World Junior Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships U20 marking another important milestone in consolidating Al Ain’s position on the global chess map.
