Many Indians, particularly those from south India, simply love the idli. This steamed rice cake is a hot favourite of millions and a must-have for breakfast – even dinner. It is the breakfast – and even serves as dinner – for many on the go, be they busy office-goers, students, friends meeting for a gabfest or just retirees. There is also a day dedicated to this popular snack: March 30 was World Idli Day.
However, one idli fan took his passion for the snack to new heights: he forked out Rs6 lakh (nearly Dhs27,000) on this delicacy during the last one year. The revelation was made by the food-delivery platform Swiggy .
The user ordered over 8,000 plates of idlis including orders placed for friends and family, while travelling across cities like Bengaluru and Chennai.
According to an analysis, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai are the top three cities where idlis are ordered the most. This is followed by other major cities. Other cities that follow closely are Mumbai, Coimbatore, Pune, Vizag, Delhi, Kolkata, and Kochi.
