DUBAI: An inspector battered a military officer and broke his nose upon suspecting him of looking at his sister, the Dubai Criminal Court heard on Sunday.

The Arab defendant, 26, repeatedly punched the face of the Emirati captain, 32, at Al Safa Street at around 8:30pm on Dec.30. The victim sustained a bent nose coupled with chronic pain and difficulties in breathing.

Doctors called it a 5 per cent permanent deformity. Prosecutors also accused him of damaging the victim’s motorcycle and helmet. The victim filed a complaint at the Bur Dubai Police Station.

The defendant refuted the allegations in court questioning. His lawyer asked for time to prepare and the victim’s lawyer also asked for time to present civil lawsuit files. The presiding judge deferred the hearing to Apr.7.

In prosecution records, the captain was riding a Honda motorcycle along Safa Street towards City Walk when he stopped at a red signal. “There was a traffic jam. I turned to look behind and check on my friend.

“My friend was an amateur biker. On my right hand was a car driven by the defendant. He lowered the window and said ‘come with us in the car.’ I told him I was checking behind for my friend and did not look inside his car.”

The victim turned behind again. The defendant drove closer to him and said, “No! Come inside.” Thereafter, the victim overtook four cars and stopped at a red signal. Suddenly, the defendant knocked him from behind.

“I fell from the motorcycle and it fell on my leg. I could not move because it was 400kg heavy. He started thrusting blows on my helmet until it broke. He repeatedly punched my face and broke my nose. I lost consciousness.”

A female Canadian motorist said she saw the defendant shouting at the victim before raining punches in his face until he collapsed. He kicked the motorcycle and punched the victim as the latter struggled to stand up. Pedestrians intervened.

A sergeant said the defendant during police interrogations allegedly acknowledged the incident and narrated he was with his sister when he stopped at a traffic signal. The victim who was on his left side started looking inside the car.

He lowered the window and told him, “Well, what are you looking at? Come sit with us!” The victim replied, “Do you have a place for me to sit?” The defendant battered him then went to hospital over injuries sustained while punching the helmet.
