The Misdemeanour Court sentenced an Arab in absentia to one month in jail and fined him Dhs541,000 on charges of embezzling the same amount from a Gulf woman after impersonating a Gulf pilot with several commercial projects.

He will be deported after serving his jail term.

The case dates back to last year when a Gulf woman filed a complaint in which she stated that she had been defrauded by the convict, who claimed to be a pilot.

According to her statement, she met the convict in the City Walk area in Dubai who offered to help her pay the fines imposed on three of her vehicles and she agreed.

The convict paid the due amounts to the concerned department and claimed that he was able to get the fines reduced, she said.

After a while, the convict offered to partner her in used car trade and resale.

She handed him Dhs300,000 and other sums of money that she obtained from her mother and a friend, totaling Dhs541,000 in addition to bank cards to invest in projects proposed by him.

When the victim asked him to provide her with their partnership contracts, the convict tended to procrastinate and avoid answering her repeated calls.

She stressed that she did not receive any documents about her money but only kept conversations between them stating that he had received those amounts.

A policeman stated that the convict was arrested but denied embezzling the victim’s money.

He, however, admitted that he merely had a friendship relationship with the victim and that the money he received as per their WhatsApp conversations was given back later on together with her bank cards.
